Compare quotes the right way

Don’t compare windows on price alone

A cheaper number rarely means a cheaper job. Read every window quote properly first — then compare several vetted local installers on the same spec.

  • Learn what a fair, complete quote should show
  • Compare like-for-like, not just headline price
  • Free, no-obligation quotes from accredited local fitters

The quick quote checklist

1 Matching glass & frame specs
2 A full price breakdown
3 Guarantee — and who backs it
4 FENSA or CERTASS registration
5 Deposit & cancellation terms

Step 1 of 2

Do you own your home?

No problem — you can still request quotes, but an installer will need the homeowner’s go‑ahead before any work is agreed.

The 7 things every window quote should show

If a quote is missing any of these, you can’t compare it fairly — and you can’t hold anyone to it. Ask for them in writing before you decide.

  1. The exact glass and frame spec

Glass type and U‑value, the frame profile and material, colour and any trims — the detail that actually sets the price.

  2. Every window and door, itemised

Quantity, size, opening style and location for each unit, so two quotes are describing the same job.

  3. A full price breakdown

Supply, fitting, VAT, scaffolding, waste removal and “making good” — not just one round number.

  4. Lead time and how long it takes

When the survey and installation would happen, and how many days you’ll have fitters on site.

  5. The guarantee — and who backs it

Length of cover, what it includes, and whether it’s an insurance‑backed guarantee that survives if the firm doesn’t.

  6. Certification and registration

FENSA or CERTASS registration and building‑control notification, so the work is signed off correctly.

  7. Deposit, payments and cancellation

Any deposit, the payment schedule, how the deposit is protected, and your right to cancel.

Compare like-for-like, not just the price

The cheapest quote often describes a cheaper job — thinner glass, a lower‑spec profile, fewer opening casements, or “making good” left off entirely. Until every quote lists the same specification, the numbers aren’t really comparable.

Line the quotes up field by field: same glass, same frames, same number of openers, same guarantee, same VAT treatment. When one number is a lot lower, it’s usually because something on that list is missing — and that’s worth a question before you sign.

A quick like-for-like check

Same glass? Match glass type and U‑value across every quote.

Same frames? Compare profile, material and colour, not just “uPVC”.

Same count? Check the number, size and opening style of each unit.

Same extras? Scaffolding, waste, making good and VAT all included?

Same cover? Compare guarantee length and whether it’s insurance‑backed.

Compare the right way

Common questions

How many window quotes should I get?

Three is the usual sweet spot — enough to spot an outlier price or a missing line item without dragging the process out. Our guide on how many quotes to get explains why.

Is comparing quotes here free?

Yes. Requesting and comparing quotes is free and there’s no obligation to go ahead with any installer you’re matched with.

Why is the cheapest quote not always the best?

A lower number often describes a lower‑spec job — thinner glass, fewer openers, or extras like scaffolding and making good left off. Comparing like‑for‑like is the only fair way to judge value.

What should a proper window quote include?

The exact glass and frame spec, an itemised price breakdown, lead times, the guarantee and who backs it, FENSA/CERTASS registration, and deposit and cancellation terms. See what to check.

Do I have to be the homeowner?

You can still request quotes if you’re not the owner, but an installer will need the homeowner’s go‑ahead before any work is agreed.
